"My grandmother told me something not long before she died, that resonated with me, because I had been through a series of relationships that all started great but turned dysfunctional. She said she should have divorced my grandfather 45 years earlier. My grandfather was a major asshole 99% of the time, and I wondered why she had stayed with him. She said that “back then, people stayed together even though they were miserable, and even if it meant you would live a miserable life. And people thought they would eventually find happiness in heaven, but now it just feels like a wasted life … there is not going to be heaven, and I missed my only shot at happiness."
